Timeline (Gantt chart)

The timeline displays several visual elements that help you understand your project schedule.

Task bars

Represent scheduled Jira issues and internal tasks.

Summary tasks

Represent parent tasks, Epics, or projects that summarize their child tasks.

Progress indicator

Shows the percentage of work completed for each task.

Dependencies

Visual links between related tasks.

Milestones

Represent significant project events with zero duration.

Deadlines

Display task deadlines configured from Jira.

Markers

Display Today, Releases, Sprints, and custom chart markers.

Baseline

Compare the current schedule with a saved project baseline.

Critical Path

Highlights the sequence of tasks that directly determines the project's finish date.


Optional timeline display

Several timeline elements can be shown or hidden from the Show menu on the toolbar.

Available options include:

  • Baselines

  • Critical Path

  • Today marker

  • Release markers

  • Sprint markers

  • Custom markers

  • Task summaries

  • Resource assignments

  • Resource workload

These options allow you to tailor the timeline to your planning needs.


Timeline scale

The time scale displayed at the top of the chart automatically adjusts according to the selected zoom level.

Available scales include:

  • Hour

  • Day

  • Week

  • Month

  • Quarter

  • Year

Changing the scale affects both the timeline and the Resource panel.


Deadlines

Task deadlines can be displayed directly on the timeline.

Deadlines appear as a green downward arrow above the corresponding task.

To enable deadline display:

  1. Open Chart Configuration.

  2. Configure the Deadline field.

  3. Save the chart configuration.

Once configured, deadlines are displayed automatically for tasks with a Jira deadline.

Milestones

Milestones represent important project events with zero duration.

Starting with Gantt Suite 2.2, you can quickly convert between a task and a milestone directly from the timeline.

To convert a task:

  1. Hover over the task.

  2. Right-click to open the context menu.

  3. Select Convert to milestone or Convert to task.

Milestones are displayed as purple diamonds on the timeline.

Tips

  • Use Critical Path to quickly identify tasks that directly affect the project completion date.

  • Enable Baselines to compare the current schedule with previous project plans.

  • Display Task Summaries and Resource Assignments to improve readability when working with large schedules.

  • Zoom to the Hour scale for detailed planning or switch to Month or Year views for high-level roadmaps.

  • Convert important project checkpoints into Milestones to make them easier to identify throughout the schedule.
